Abolish the Death Penalty is a blog dedicated to...well, you know. The purpose of Abolish is to tell the personal stories of crime victims and their loved ones, people on death row and their loved ones and those activists who are working toward abolition. You may, from time to time, see news articles or press releases here, but that is not the primary mission of Abolish the Death Penalty. Our mission is to put a human face on the debate over capital punishment.

Oh, are they supposed to be guilty before we execute them?

Courtesy of Steve Hall, we learn that a new Texas Poll is being released over the weekend. Among the findings:

“Do you think Texas has executed an innocent person?”

Yes: 70 percent.

“Do you support the death penalty?”

Yes: 75 percent.

Sigh.

Worse, 52% opposed even a moratorium until problems could be fixed. Ugh.

The good news is that 44 percent supported a moratorium on executions. The last Texas poll showed only 41 percent supported a moratorium. We are making progress and by 2007 or 2009 we could achieve a moratorium.
